Is it possible to ensure the internet is both free and open independent of net neutrality issues? Isn't expansion of the internet the real guarantee of access?

They go hand-in-hand. If you build out more fiber/broadband but block or throttle things it limits the utility of the Internet for low-income people. Not like they can afford the extra $ to get “premium” access. /1
-
My guess is that everyone involved wants to charge me more. From whom do I get the better deal?
-
You get a better deal if you pay a flat fee to access all available content at the same speed (Net Neutrality). Otherwise you will end up buying you Internet service like you do cable packages. /1

I think the isp’s want to build ou their systems to accommodate huge anticipated increases in data, but the don’t want to without a bigger piece of the action.
-
They don’t really want to build out their infrastructure. They say they do, but that’s a rather flimsy lie to justify gutting Net Neutrality. If they wanted to build more they would have done it. /1

In most places in the U.S. there is only one home internet provider, maybe two. It’s highly cartelized. Insufficient competition to stop them from abusing monopoly or duopoly power. That’s why Net Neutrality regulation or legislation is important. /2
-
Everyone in this space has monopolies that are capable of being abused.

How different was the internet in 2014? Net neutrality was only brought about in 2015.

I’m always so perturbed when I see people who are anti net neutrality. Like do you really want to pay more for slower speeds and restricted services? Genuinely don’t understand.

To prevent a continued cycle of rules that flip flop with every administration change, I encourage Congress to pass bipartisan legislation with protections against blocking, censorship and discriminatory throttling.

Luckily, Senate Dems are working to do just that. However, it seems very unlikely that the "bipartisan" part will occur. Wouldn't it have been nice to have protections for consumers in place until Congress chooses to act on this?http://variety.com/2018/politics/news/fcc-net-neutrality-senate-1202657566/ …
