Roughly 2.12 million people were incarcerated in the United States in 2020. The Vera Institute of Justice, incarceration costs an avg of more than $31,000 per inmate, per year, nationwide. In some states, it's as much as $60,000. Taxpayers foot the bill.. $65,720,000,000 a year!
