If every state had Massachusetts’s gun laws, we could save thousands of lives. My bill, the MASS Act – Making America Safe and Secure – incentivizes states to adopt similar gun laws. 1. Empower local communities In Massachusetts, if anyone wants to purchase a gun, they must obtain a license. Obtaining a license requires approval from the local chief of police, which typically includes an in-person interview. Every state should do this.
2. Protect the vulnerable Massachusetts is considering enacting an Extreme Risk Protective Order law to allow families and police to remove guns from high-risk homes. Every state should do this.
3. Protect consumers In Massachusetts, manufacturing, safety and marketing standards for guns are strictly regulated. Every state should do this.
4. Regulate dealers
#MA is considering a law to require private sales to be completed at licensed dealers. In MA, dealers are required to verify a purchaser’s license, conduct a background check for every sale, and maintain a record of all sales to share with law enforcement.
5. Store guns safely In Massachusetts, gun owners are required to keep their guns safely secured in a locked container or equipped with a tamper-resistant lock. Every state should do this.
6. Get the data One of my bills, S.834, will give the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention $60 million to fund gun violence research. Research has effectively halted over the past two decades because of a Republican appropriations rider called the Dickey amendment.
7. Ban assault weapons In Massachusetts, the sale and possession of assault weapons have been permanently banned since 2004. Every state should do this.
I agree. I live in Massachusetts and own a gun.
Maybe if all states had the same number of minorities, illegals, and immigrants from countries that support terrorism as Massachusetts more than 27,000 deaths could be prevented. After all I have never seen or heard of a murder committed by a gun without someone holding it.
