Former Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis once said that each of the fifty states has the power to be a laboratory for developing new programs and policies. Right now, Massachusetts serves in that role for the other forty-nine states when it comes to gun safety legislation.
My bill — the Making America Safe and Secure Act, or MASS Act — will authorize the Department of Justice to make grants totaling $20 million in each of the next five fiscal years to states that implement and maintain comprehensive licensing standards for gun owners and dealers.
On issues from democratic independence, to same-sex marriage, to universal health care, America has looked to Massachusetts to be a national leader. America should, once again, look to us to lead the way on gun safety regulations.
