Not to be missed: a provision that would effectively eliminate protections truckers have under state and local laws - including meal and rest breaks - is being tacked onto the FAA reauthorization. Rights for all workers deserve to be protected. Raise your voice.

Aren't they already having a hard time filling long-haul trucker jobs? Why is the response from the government going to be something that makes a vital and needed job objectively worse?

Rights for truckers affect all of us: We should not want overly tired, stressed out truckers on the roads. Many of the current batch of protections were put in place after accidents during which truck drivers fell asleep on the road.

No, not really. They were lobbied for, by big carriers to protect their profit margins. I have 30 yrs, accident free...new regulations do not make me safer.

The rest periods are not paid, yet we are at work. The truck produces revenue, yet the driver does not. Has an employer of yours ever told you when you need to sleep? We are grown adults. If an adult falls asleep driving, how is a rule made by a desk jockey going to prevent

Well, employers are often mandated to give people lunch breaks.. not the same as sleep times, of course. As someone driving in a CAR, I would feel safer if I knew the big rig driver bearing down on my tail was adequately rested.

I certainly agree! Companies offer free satellite TV as recruitment tactics...do you think they are resting? It's about training. There are NO training standards in this industry. There is a need to fill trucks with warm bodies. It's deadly and embarrassing.

I thought they have to have a CDL license with continuing education updates when standards change or additions are made .. just like anyone else holding a special license

There are no continuing education programs. There are no training standards. A cosmetology student has way more training for their license, then a CDL holder. Driving a commercial vehicle has become America's fastest growing scam.
