Ok, so what about the 2.7 million kids whose parents are in jail? Send them to prison or release their parents?

Asylum is a human right.
-
I agree. We need more outreach to tell them to show up at a port of entry and ask for asylum. At that point, we should offer them every opportunity. It’s when they try to break through illegally and then claim asylum I think we should be suspicious.
-
The DOJ under trumps ordered close down all ports of entry for asylum seekers. They did it on purpose so they would have to come in illegally. Just an excuse to separate them from their children. The US government nothing but kidnappers. Since when was that legal?
-
This just isn’t true. The ports of asylum are still open. I called one myself for an article when I thought this was the case but they are open. They allow admission on grounds of asylum. I want our immigration system reformed, badly. But this is still false. We can do better
-
You call yourself a reporter and you don’t even know this fact. When people were crossing in April the DOJ close down the ports of entry. Making it impossible to come into the country legally for asylum.
-
I simply disagree. https://www.cbp.gov/border-security/along-us-borders/border-patrol-sectors … I’d love to have this discussion with you but I think we should probably have the legal situation grounded beforehand. Let’s dm first. We obviously disagree on our premises so let’s work those out beforehand

Separating immigrant families is in violation of international human rights law.https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/05/world/americas/us-un-migrant-children-families.html …

Divorce. Prison. CPS. Three ways that children are "ripped" from one or both parents each year. ... Also abortion, in which children are literally ripped from their mother, happens legally each year.
-
The United Nations, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, etc., have declared safe abortion to be a human right. Your focus is too narrow.

It's nice that politicians worry this much about illegal immigrant children, but where is this outcry when American children go to bed hungry? Or are in homeless shelters? Or in the system because their parents are useless? Where is it? Why don't we care about our own first?
-
Why is a vile human rights offense ON OUR SOIL and because of our government’s policies not our concern?! You can care about both at once. If you can’t, perhaps it’s time to expand your capacity for love.
-
You can care about both BUT THEY DONT. Some of these children were sent over alone, or with drug traffickers and their REAL parents need to be located!!
-
These sound to me like the types of excuses people use to let their consciences off the hook. Many of these families were seeking asylum. They were trying to find a safer place for their families. Instead they’re being traumatized. It’s inhumane.
-
Yes it is. But it also doesn't excuse putting others before American citizens. We have immigration laws. Every nation does. Doesn't mean they should be used to batter someone. They can be applied humanely. Doesn't change the fact that American citizens should come first.
-
But they have NOT been applied humanely. If they had been, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.
-
And I'm not defending them. Or did you miss that I said Immigration laws can be applied humanely? And should be. Unfortunately I'm not running this screwed administration.

Start fining Trump for every child and for each day they have been kept away from their families! They will eventually sue him anyway! And this country.
