Please do more than hand out a number. The real way to prevent suicide is to fund brain health - treatment, research, coverage for medicines - and not hope that someone calls. Screening at annual checkups for signs of depression, anxiety, and other brain illness is the way.

Not everyone who commits suicide is mentally in or clinically depressed... a tragic event can cause an individual to take their life... The solution is to be present, engaged and involved in the lives of those you love.... Love is the answer ... prevention, solution and cure

Thanks Kamala. Also reach out directly to people to check in with them if/when you think they may be struggling.
-
I say that because while good, it's easier to just pass along a natl suicide helpline- it's much harder to call, text, or visit people who are depressed, & are dealing with mental health issues, or are just dealing with life issues. I texted a friend today-& will call another.
-
It might be good to start a conversation about how we're connecting with others in our lives- because often people who are struggling, don't let on to others, or they do & others don't know how to deal with it. How do we express empathy with others & without "bright-siding" them?

Also, if someone you know is at risk, MAKE THE FIRST MOVE. Call them, message them, visit them. Get some ice cream with them. Tell them you love them. SHOW UP.
-
Totally agree! Being there for others is important.

at the point a person is in such chronic despair, calling a stranger on a hotline who will give false insincere hope is NOT the answer. It's in people doing the right thing (s) during the journey to despair. I also hate people who say it's selfish to want to end the pain.

I think what is really needed quickly is some guidance for people who are friends with someone struggling. What should I say; what should I not say?

We need for people to have access to treatments and therapies. Not make it hard to get or unaffordable.

Typically ... those who are thinking about taking their own life will talk about it first.. by the time they decide to take it... it’s to late....Be present to those you love and be engaged so you may see the signs before it’s to late
