My colleague Princeton sociologist Tod Hamilton wisely has observed that we may be underestimating the extent to which black women are receiving inferior care from physicians while their pregnancy is underway. Serena Williams’ experience may be the tip of the iceberg.

Thank you, Senator. This is why we need women in power! In 2018 women should not have to die to further the species. All women-incl those of us who don't want kids-must demand better because we are ppl and deserve appropriate medical care!

Thought you were all about killing the unborn so is this just another voting issue? Are your intended voters not surviving? Maybe if you cared about the child, we could help the mothers. Am I being naive or are your bigoted views in conflict?

Will black women are at higher risk, the overall maternal and infant mortality rates are abysmal in the US. Worst among developed nations.
-
Technically not worst 32/35 but you are spot on! It’s largely our rates among black women that’s driving this.

Absolutely.

Kirsten, I had the opportunity of hearing you speak, once, while you visited the Capital Region (Albany, NY). It's more than apparent that you care about things "THAT MATTER."

It's all about perception. If a White, Ivy League, grad student sees another White women who has fallen asleep while she studies, she says, "I can relate." If she sees a Black woman, she says, "What is that PERSON doing in my dorm. The same goes for doctors and nurses. RACISM.

I agree - it is racism embodied.

Must definitely prioritize women of color, but USA has a crisis for all women having babies. We are losing serious medical ground.

I don’t think this administration or many of the sitting male Senators care about or value women. Very sad state these days
