There’s a movement growing across this country, from West Virginia to Oklahoma and Arizona to Kentucky, and now in Colorado. Educators are raising their voices for fair pay and adequate resources to help their students succeed.

When these teachers speak out, they’re fighting for all of us – especially our kids. They’re asking for the chance to focus their energy on giving students the best education possible. We need to stand with them.

Colorado teachers walked out today. Teacher pay in that state ranks 46th in the country. Educators are paid about $7,000 less than the national average. This can’t be how we treat people who dedicate their lives to our shared future.

The Colorado Education Association found that teachers spend an average of $656 from their own pockets, each year, to make sure their students have what they need. This is the wrong way to fund our kids’ education.

As more teachers organize and raise their voices, they need to hear from us. Let’s tell teachers now: We’re with you. Stay with it, and stay together. And thank you for caring for our kids and their futures as you do for your own.

I’m so glad I’m a teacher. No teacher gets into the profession for the money. They get into the profession to make a difference and how does our government honor that? By underfunding the most important profession and forcing teachers to use their small paycheck to help kids.

True! What @ NYC with Charter Schools? They are a horror story for students, breaking Unions, ruining teachers rights... and they are funded by tax payers dollars, in public schools and public places. This is worse than poor pay for teachers; this is stealing teachers jobs!

Plot on a graph the amount of money spent on education since, say, 1950, and against that the educational achievement obtained by the largely functional illiterate graduates of today. Note the spikes downward of the latter and the rise of teacher unions and USDE.

How does any of this relate to NYS???? Work in a district for 15 years and you'll be over $100k with 3 months off and no way to get fired for sucking at your job. Oh and don't forget about the pensions. Again, how does this relate to your constituents?

Uh that is several years of teaching and a graduate level degree before you get to the very top step in the NYC public school system salary schedule. Many jobs in New York City have a starting salary of $100,000.

Agreed, I said abt 15 yrs exp and you can't compare a teacher to a business job. 100k w/ a pension for life is a pretty sweet gig and more than enough to provide fair housing and not be bottom tier. In both employee situations they made a conscious decision to go into that field

If that person is married with a family you also need to factor in the cost savings and benefits of being off 3 mths a yr (1 full qtr!) and savings in child care and also physically being there with your kids which is hard to monetarily quantify but definitely has an impact.
