For #WomensHistoryMonth, I’d love to hear about a woman who has shaped who you are today. For me, it’s my grandmother Polly Noonan. She taught me to work hard and speak up – and that women belong in politics.

Because of my grandmother’s example, I knew as a little girl that I could dream to be in office, and that I could – and should – use my voice for change.

My grandmother went to Pitt at 19 and helped Jonas Salk research the polio vaccine, discovering a lifelong love for virology and helping eradicate viruses in underprivileged communities. She became a virologist at Yale and helped discover a strain of tropical dengue fever in Asia

My mom. Because no one in this world loved me more than she did. My daughter. Because she is the strongest person I have ever met. She inspires me to be the strongest person I can be, every day.

My mother taught me about being strong, when that's the only option. She best Hodgkins Lymphoma in 1999. So When I was diagnosed w/Leiomyosarcoma in 2015, being strong thru surgeries & chemo were my only option. #strongisbeautiful

Mine pushed me to stay in school, move away from home, always make my own money and gave me a family ring at 40. "Now you have a really big diamond and didn't have to marry any one." RIP

My grandma, never one to hold back an opinion or critique (for better or worse!), always said “Do it right or don’t do it at all!”. Without context it could be seen as harsh, but it never was and to this day it reminds me to do things thoroughly and with purpose.

My mother-in-law shaped who I am after my mom did a great job of teaching me right from wrong. My MIL taught me to speak up, ask questions, and don’t be afraid. Fortunately, my daughter has seen them both in action and we’ve all shaped her. My daughter is pretty awesome!!

There so many, but today it would be my good friend Marcie Garside whom recently passed away from 9/11 related breast cancer after fighting for six plus long years. She made beautiful memories and arrived to chemo in a new kick ass convertible Mercedes.

For me, it was Sister Viola, a Sister of Mercy, who believed and supported me when no one else in my life did. The education I received from her and the other nuns in my early years gave me a foundation for the rest of my life for which I am eternally grateful.

My grandmother Anna Stuber taught me to be independent, self reliant and frugal. She would reuse, re-purpose and recycle before those words were part of our lexicon. She lived 97 yrs to see her daughter turn 70. <3

My Aunt Joan is a Canadian War Bride. She grew up in Birmingham first through Depression, then through wartime. She taught us never to waste anything, how to endure in tough times and carry on. She is my true heroine. Now 95 she still teaches us how to save and make do.
