Do you you have a story to tell about a time when you really needed #paidleave but didn’t have it? Or a time when you did have #paidleave, and it helped your family or your business? I'd love to know—tell me in a reply! #FMLA25

I had complications when my daughter as born. I was in ICU for a week and remained in hospital until she was more than a month old. As a teacher, I was on summer vacation but my husband had a wife in hospital and a newborn at home, in two different states.

He called his office and said he wasn't coming in. "You can dock me. You can fire me. You can call it vacation. You can call it paternity leave." Family owned, family oriented company called it leave, paid him full salary, and kept flowers at my bedside for a month.

As an untenured teacher, I had to plan my baby around my summer. I could only afford 4 weeks unpaid FMLA. For my 2nd, I was tenured- 8 weeks paid after a c-section and I took 4 unpaid FMLA. This was a $ strain, and it impacted my seniority. It shouldn't. New moms need more time!

I taught at the University of Missouri at Columbia in the early 1990s--and got pregnant (while still on the "tenure track"). Not only did they have no preganancy leave for faculty (only for staff, eg, women!), but they offered no extra time toward earning tenure!

I had a delayed start date to a new job of 14 weeks. But my husband got 12 weeks of paid family leave. It made a huge difference in the well being off our family financially but more importantly emotionally. #PaidLeaveMeans #DadGetsToBondToo

March 2016, hubby in awful snowmobile accident, he couldn't use his hips for 3 months. I used the sick leave I'd built up as an elem teacher to tend to him. #paidleave helped us

As a single mom of 2 yr old twins and about to give birth to another I made the ultimate sacrifice of adoption for that baby because I could not afford to take off work and didn't have family around to help. To reduce suffering for all I had to choose to give her a better life.

The fact that you knew what was best for that third baby shows what an incredible mother you are. I can’t imagine how hard it must have been to make that decision. Amazing job, Momma!

Thank you. It was the hardest decision I've ever made. I delayed it until I knew there was no other option. Looking back I know it was for the best but that doesn't make it hurt any less. Next month will be 7 years but knowing how much better her life is, makes it all worth it.

Self-employed, no such thing. And during recession, when my biz tanked, I couldn't lay myself off and collect unemployment-even though I've paid into it for years (since self-employed, I pay the full employer match). I can pay in but can never collect.

Me too. I had 6 paid weeks as a mag editor after baby #1, plus 6 unpaid. Went freelance after baby #2--two weeks post csection. #FMLA25

C-section, too. We really need to do better supporting our families in this country. I'm sitting here planning my son's summer camps and already stressing about how I'll get work done on the days he's in shorter camps. Plus, it's expensive!

Yes! I love the flexibility of a solopreneur life, but not the lack of benefits- especially as we pay twice as much in self employment tax with no real return.

Yes. I’m a federal employee and we get 0 paid leave for having a baby. None. Making us the last among industrialized nations You are allowed to use sick leave you’ve earned but only for 6 weeks and then you return to work with no leave to take if you or baby gets sick.

I worked for a small company that was exempt from FMLA. My wife had our baby early via urgent c-section and her father died the next day. I wasn’t even allowed to use all of my vacation. I was only allowed to use 5 days. We all deserve leave.
