In Canada maternity leave is 12 months and it is against the law to let an employee go on maternity leave God Bless Canada

I have regularly seen people let go who were on medical, disability, or family leave. The pendulum has swung to far to the side of employer rights. We need to strengthen the rights of employees across the board. Only 7% of private sector employees are rep'd by a union today.
-
Companies leverage their enormous legal power to cause employees to sign their rights away. One example of this is signing away your right to be represented in a class action status.

Then what is FMLA doing on the books? Non issue.
-
That was my question. I have a non fatal brain disease that caused me to be off work weeks for brain surgery, a day from pain or coming in late/leaving early. I was covered by FMLA. There was never a problem. I don't understand. Are ppl just not aware of it ??
-
FMLA is unpaid. This allows for pay while people recover so they aren't forced between healing properly and feeding their family
-
If the employer wants to do that, great!
-
That's the point is to make it a federal thing, not if employers feel so inclined. I think it should work like maternity/paternity leave but extend for other conditions & family members. If I am still not correct, let me know Monica !
-
Actually maternity/paternity leave isn't paid either. I don't know if it would extend to other conditions or not
-
Obviously I never had a baby. I bet lots of other ppl assume it's paid b/c a lot of companies do. Yes, that should DEFINITELY be paid along with other circumstances within self/family.

-
Most lower income jobs you get no paid sick leave or personal time at all

Last week, my son-in-law was fired for missing time while my 3-day old grandson was in the NICU fighting for his little life. My daughter went back to work less than 2 weeks after giving birth. It's infuriating. Happiest time turned into nightmare.

FMLA - the Family Medical Leave Act This is already in place. I am not following. Someone who can inform me of the difference please do. FMLA covers 3 mths time out of the year, is the
#FAMILYAct cover more time ? -
FMLA covers leave, but not paid. This would cover more, and paid, so a mom who just had a baby is faced with choosing between healing properly and being able to feed their child
-
Thank you for clarifying. Its been so long (17 yrs) I didn't remember. Through the surgeries I was still w/husband. After I left him I think I would work over & weekends to make up for when I wasn't there. Again thank you !
-
Yeah, I had a complicated pregnancy including 3 months on bedrest...we had to move in with my inlaws because I couldn't work, and he couldn't work and take care of me. And I didn't bounce back quick after that...I think the bedrest weakened my body more than labor/delivery

On the job work injuries are another one where they try to get rid of you if you "don't heal on the government's max time guidelines." If you require accommodation you end up w/another set of changes that makes it difficult to comply. This is true especially of older workers.
