While Pres. Obama’s first circuit court nominees were approved with overwhelming bipartisan votes, Pres. Trump has largely put forward controversial nominees outside the mainstream. 10 of President Trump’s first 15 circuit court nominees were confirmed with fewer than 60 votes.
Trump nominees have been incredibly young, allowing them to reshape our courts for generations. Nine of Pres. Trump’s first 15 confirmed circuit court nominees, or 60 percent, are in their 40s. By comparison, only one of Pres. Obama’s first 15 confirmed nominees was in their 40s.
In order to stack the courts for generations, Republicans are dismantling a Senate tradition that ensures consultation and consensus with home-state senators. Through advice and consent, the Senate is meant to be a check on the president, not a rubber stamp.
