Problem here is, under UN convention on refugee applying for asylum (non-economical), you were suppose to do so in the FIRST safe country you enter and that is not the US. Why do folks who are threaten by gangs in their hometown in El Salvador, Honduras, not do so in Mexico?

Reason is obvious if you want to see it: US has higher living standard, but it is not the FIRST safe country. Not even for the Chinese girls the Senator referenced in her story. It is called asylum country shopping. Same story goes for refugees flocking to Australia via boats.
