Buyers are behind higher mpg. Buyers are not wavering in what we want. If an auto manufacturer decides to cling to lowered governmental minimums, just like with poor safety and features, they should be prepared to lose market share.
The EPA is willfully ignoring the fact that we already have one national standard and it’s working. Automakers are on track to raise fuel efficiency to more than 50 mpg by 2025 and at lower costs than expected. And lest the manufacturer thinks, like crappy health insurance, that some people will trade quality for cost, the market system ensures that anyone who can offer more value for dollar will win, so the race is still to the top, not the bottom.
