It breaks my heart to hear that another horse died because of injuries sustained during the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita Racetrack. This year, 37 horses have died at Santa Anita, seven of those since racing resumed in September. That’s simply unacceptable.
In the past, I’ve called for horse racing to be suspended at Santa Anita until it could ensure the safety of horses would be protected. With continued racetrack deaths, it’s clear that not enough has changed, so I renew that call.
I will work with Governor Newsom to look at all options to protect racehorses and increase transparency at racetracks. If the horse racing industry is unwilling to treat these magnificent creatures humanely, it has no business operating in the United States.pic.twitter.com/39tSGre4A7
Senator, with all due respect: no one can afford to shut down racing. Racing needs a national governing board and strict regulations. Your current @caCHRB is unethical and corrupt regarding enforcement, penalties and punishment.They have been allowed to look the other way to long
Your safety protocols did help. You just need more. You had a trainer admit a horse that ran in the Classic did not work well days before the race. @BreedersCup and @santaanitapark did nothing with this information. This information must be followed up on by a vet and track.
Accidents happen in pastures and barns with regularity. It’s awful, and heartbreaking for everyone who loves and cares for them on a daily basis.
Horses are born to run. That is what they do.

SANTA Anita fine. But DEL MAR has led the nation in setting the standards for horses and racing.
With all do respect leaps and bounds cannot be made overnight. It’s all about baby steps weaning the horses slowly off medication which limits have been drastically cut. Two year olds starting this year will not be allowed to run on race day medication.
By the year 2021 no horse in California will be allowed to run on any race day medication. Veterinary oversight is much greater now. UC Davis is currently working on new diagnostic technologies geared towards racehorses.
With new regulations over veterinary treatments it is also forcing trainers to give horses more time off.
