The Supreme Court today heard arguments on adding a citizenship question to the 2020 census. An accurate count of everyone living in the United States is vital to our democracy. It determines everything from congressional representation to funding for schools or infrastructure.
It's clear the Trump administration misled Congress and the American people about the true rationale for changing the census. Sec. Ross’s falsely testified that DOJ requested this change in order to enforce the Voting Rights Act – that wasn't the case.
Instead, studies show it would depress turnout in immigrant communities. The Supreme Court must uphold lower court rulings that a citizenship question is unconstitutional. The census should not be a political football, used to suppress responses and target states like California.
