The only way for Israel to retain its Jewish and democratic character is to support the creation of an independent Palestine by its side. I hope this week’s election doesn’t push a peaceful two-state solution out of reach.

Now that Prime Minister Netanyahu will likely form the next government, I urge his coalition to exercise restraint and reject campaign promises to annex any portion of the West Bank – doing so would be a serious blow to lasting peace.

It’s not sustainable for Israel to militarily occupy the West Bank. Nor is it just to continue denying Palestinians their inherent right of self-determination. I urge Israeli leaders to take no action – particularly annexing the West Bank – that would kill a two-state solution.

If Israel militarizes the West Bank the long fuse attached to that powder keg will quickly get shorter. Then of course the U.S. will rush in, spending wasted time and money to diffuse the citation, and bail out Israel. I’m tired of the arrogance and hatred from both sides.

There is no such thing as Palestine. Israeli Arabs have more rights in Israel than 22 neighbouring Arab countries. They can vote, be gay, have a job and live in freedom in the most wonderful country in the Middle East. It’s called democracy. It’s called Israel. Shalom.
