On this day in 1965, a group of civil rights activists set out from Selma to demand their right to vote be respected. Despite attacks from state troopers, they persevered. It’s thanks to those marchers, including @RepJohnLewis, that Congress finally passed the Voting Rights Act.

The Emancipation Proclamation guaranteed the right to vote for Black Men. Jim Crow laws instituted by the Dems blocked voting with things like the poll tax. The Civil Rights Acts that were presented by the Republicans thru the fifties to end Jim Crow laws was rejected by the Dems

LBJ one of those rejecting Dems finally approved of the Civil Right Act that included the right to vote act not because of the protests but because they need the minority vote in a very divided country by this time. Just as the Dems need illegal voters.

And you know what? Some of those brave activists went to their representative's offices as children and weren't disrespected, talked down to, or rudely dismissed. Look what they went on to do.... #LearnALesson

Until 2013 when Justice Scalia stripped article 5. and even though it was reported the American public didn't care because nobody understood what that meant. I was livid. That's when the marches should have started. #GoodTrouble Everyone MUST vote and honor the sacrifices made.

@Charmander_AMPC is correct, and I’ll quote it as well: “In 1965 democrats beat and intimidated the marchers. In 2019 the Democratic Party can’t condemn an anti-Semite”
