Florida’s citrus industry is a vital part of our economy. But if we don’t find a cure to citrus greening soon, we won’t be growing oranges in Florida much longer. That’s why I’m asking for $125 million for 5 more years of citrus greening research in this year’s farm bill.pic.twitter.com/jG7Cu9XWGd

Sir, with all due respect, as someone living in Florida, why doesn’t the citrus industry pay for this research? Why are we, as taxpayers, asked to fund research for a commercial industry, particularly when there are many other legitimate needs for Gov investment?

Do you think US citrus farmers can afford to set up the research facilities that already exist at land-grant universities, much less operate them? If so, then plan on paying $5-7 per lb for US citrus products and wait decades for results -- if the trees are still alive then.

Trump's destructive NAFTA talks and tariffs, and EPA's relaxed regs on chemical use (RoundUp) and cuts to bee protection programs, may destroy the US citrus industry before greening does. It hurts to write that.

GLOBAL WEIRDING, as Thomas Friedman so aptly put it. Fight climate change and you'll be fighting for America's farmers.

Maybe we should stop cramming trees into orchards, let insects do there jobs and find a way to quick compost fruits and leaves to improve soil quality without polluting our waterways and causing algae blooms.

Tell you what Bill, offer a 100 million cash reward, to whoever finds a cure. No one Corp want to take the gamble, but 10,000 researchers will. Use open database. Production of a formula is cheap and easy
