ICYMI: Thousands of Colorado teachers demonstrated at the state Capitol for better wages and greater support for public education last week. As a former Superintendent, here are some of my thoughts on the rallies.

Shrinking state budgets have increased class sizes, reduced vital support for students like mental health services & special education, and sometimes slashed school weeks to 4 days. We cannot allow mindless budget shortfalls to force wrongheaded changes to our kids' education.

Coloradans want to take the long view and invest in our state’s future. To do this, we cannot neglect our schools. As a first step, we must find some way to prune the fiscal underbrush that threatens so deeply our investments in the future. Our children deserve better.

I think they blew it with the pot tax. It's great that it's going to be used for construction of new schools. 50% of it should have gone to fund and air condition existing schools and address teacher pay and the other half to construction. All the best Senator

That's because 60% of teachers are worthless. All they want is more money, and that has been said for the past 40 years. Enough money. Try some real teaching and less complaining. How many vacation days do they get?

Same in my state. Insurance rate increases coupled with no raises since the Obama stimulus = a pretty massively cut for our teachers.
