A few important stats: Colorado teachers are now earning less than they did 15 years ago, when compared to inflation. The gap between what a college graduate makes as a teacher and what she could make in another profession in our state is the largest in the country.
Shrinking state budgets have increased class sizes, reduced vital support for students like mental health services & special education, and sometimes slashed school weeks to 4 days. We cannot allow mindless budget shortfalls to force wrongheaded changes to our kids' education.
Coloradans want to take the long view and invest in our state’s future. To do this, we cannot neglect our schools. As a first step, we must find some way to prune the fiscal underbrush that threatens so deeply our investments in the future. Our children deserve better.
The Colorado teacher walkouts are part of a growing movement around the country. Read more on why it's so important that we listen to our teachers:https://www.denverpost.com/2018/04/26/listening-to-our-teachers/ …
Dear Bennet, were these same teachers working under the Obama’s and Clinton’s regimen of working conditions? So of course a demonstration was needed to fix past history. Republicans in the states will do it. Fix what the Clinton’s and Obama’s didn’t
Please learn how the things work to have credibility. Republicans in the Colorado State Senate think it's more important to fine and jail teachers for protesting rather than participate in fixing things that TABOR has broken. Nothing to do with your Fox News labeled Dem demons.
So it also came to my attention that during a downturn on the economy back in 2008 , the general fund borrowed 4 billion dollars from Colorado education and forgot to pay those money back , is this true . If so give back the money they owe to education and educators .
I'm not sure what the number are, but Colorado did indeed cut education funding, and many teachers experienced pay freezes- some for as long as 7 years. However, the state legislature was responsible for that, so you need ask your state Senator and Representative to fix it.
Thanks for the info , super helpful .
Since I tweeted that, there's been an initiative added to the ballot in CO that will give a boost to school funding by taxing corporations and people making over $150k. It's called initiative 73. More info from @GSTC2018
Is this a state incentive or a local one?
It's state.
“Prune the fiscal underbrush “......now there is an actionable strategy from @SenBennetCO ....NOT! Quite an emotional pleas from a bleeding heart lib....but not a single, substantive, data based idea on how to solve.....whoopdee horse manure Mike.....absolutely worthless tweets
That is his sentiment. It is the state legislators that have to work on this. And if we are bleeding heart liberals, does that make you a coldhearted conservative?
Senator, you are awesome.
can't help but notice, politicians seem to be pretty quiet about arming teachers when they're surrounding their capitals...
Agree wholeheartedly. Listening to teachers and educators is the first step. The first step, though. Listening is not enough; we, as citizens, must hold elected officials accountable for what they do with what they heard. We must *all* listen to the teachers.
Hope the politicos were listening
