The highest peacetime deficit in our history was not under Bush (either one) but under Reagan. Of course, this was entirely due to profligate spending by House Democrats

And winning the Cold War.

If you do the math, his original budget - tax cuts and defense increases - would have balanced, or close to it. It was the "social program" spending Tip O'Neill insisted on that blew up the deficit
-
True. Reagan did what he needed to do, cut the deal he needed to cut in order to address the critical issues. Trump is doing what he needs to do... and when the Dems finally hand him a super-majority, I have no doubt massive spending cuts will be on the table.

It ain't getting paid back man. Buy gold and Bitcoin. There's no political strategy to cut trillions if dollars of unfunded liabilities so what *will* happen is the fed will print more and more and default will happen through inflation.
-
This is why Russia and China are trying to pivot away from $... They see the writing on the wall: dollar collapse

It doesn't matter. Certainly not as long as the Fed exists.

You live in socialist state enslaved by unpayable debt & the Fed, with a fake two-party dichotomy Best hope is that with less taxes, more spending, you can't pay your interest, the entire economy collapses leading to a revolution & hopefully, a new non debt-based monetary systempic.twitter.com/OUBcmsyW0m

You have some trucons over at ConservativeReview freaking out about it every once and while (cough:Daniel Horowitz:cough), but otherwise it’s pretty dead. I think people believe America will reach a tipping point long before the deficits hurt us.

It used to be one of my biggest things. Now I don't even care, its too late to get it under control anyway.

I'm in the same boat as the other replies so far. I expect that the US is headed for a split within our lifetimes, and I hope it will be a voluntary peaceful separation, but however that shakes out, whatever emerges will not accept the debt of America 1.
-
What I see as far more likely is the Lib'tards are going to succeed in provoking a civil war, and they won't have to worry about debt (or anything else) going forward.

There are other battles to fight at the moment. Do you have any idea how amazing it is for a conservative to see the likes of Graham and McConnell actually FIGHTING TO WIN? With ZERO fucks given? ...and WINNING? The Lib'tards have not yet BEGUN to LOSE. Humiliations galore!
-
lol what...? McConnell and Graham have not changed one bit on all the issues. They just confirmed a Bush establishment guy, that's all. They're still as bad on everything. Acting fake tough on TV is meaningless compared to actual issues & substance like spending, deficit, etc.
-
Fake tough? THEY WON. After all the years and all the bull$h!t of "not the hill to die on" and going along to get along, FINALLY they are sticking it to the Dems. We WIN. They LOSE. Graham on CNN: "I don't give a shit!" If you can't see that as a profound change... Look again!
-
Meaningless. They have the same positions on all the issues They would've done the same thing under Bush. Jeb would've nominated Kavanaugh. It's pure pandering to people like you that's all. Graham didn't "win" anything & he literally admitted it's just a "campaign strategy"
-
The reason our system never changes is because of this kind of gullibility. The GOP is still as terrible as it ever was, and that's why they will never do anything about the deficit and will keep doing everything Democrats want.https://www.conservativereview.com/news/what-election-republicans-have-already-handed-congress-to-the-democrats/ …
-
And your solution is what? Vote third party and render yourself irrelevant while handing the Dems the reins of power? I don't think so. NOBODY expected Graham or McConnell to grow a pair. Maybe it won't last, but until the go back to being RINOs, they and the GOP get my vote!
-
At least throw out people like Graham (co-author of the Gang of 8 bill), elect more anti-establishment people & hold them accountable so they deliver on the issues instead of making false promises & keeping you satisfied & placated by acting "ballsy" on TV while nothing changes.pic.twitter.com/0Sp9vqdTyb
-
I've no problem primary-ing Graham and other RINOs... but I'm also open to the possibility that Trump has, as promised, taught them to win. I'm as cynical and pessimistic as they come, but if they're willing to keep on fighting to win, I'll keep supporting them.
