“Bigotry is taught at home” is such a lie. The most infamous bigot that ever was (to many people’s minds anyway) would be Hitler. And his parents never taught him to hate juice. He learned that all by himself later in his life.

He’s talking about how he preferred the “serious” papers but he had three problems: their bootlicking of the Hapsburg monarchy, their attacks on the German emperor, and most of all: their praising of France. Because of these flagrant biases, he turned to trashier papers.

Trashier papers that were anti-Semitic. He didn’t enjoy the anti-semitism, but they were more fair on the coverage of Austria/Germany/France. So he read them instead. This sounds awfully familiar. An irresponsible, dishonest media losing credibility. Readers looking elsewhere...

Just as an aside: every man is responsible for his own actions. Just because you read something doesn’t mean it’s the author’s fault you acted on it. But it is REALLY interesting to me that this story is never told. That the press is never implicated in his turn to extremism.

The prevailing attitude seems to be “we are like soldiers & fire fighters & you plebs should treat us like the heroes we obviously are!” The problem w/ this is: you have to earn it. Through demonstrating courage & through telling the truth as well as you can. They aren’t tho.

They aren’t doing this at all today. And they weren’t back then in Vienna either. And there were consequences to that, eventually. Same today. They want the power but not the responsibility. They’re behaving recklessly. And arrogantly. It’s gonna get people hurt. Already has.

Looking at names now. Noticing patterns. Same as it ever was.

He finally freaks out when he goes walking at night & sees German people being pimped out by them. Debauchery under cover of darkness. “I was filled with wrath.”

Also: Little is on the wrong path. The “I’m gonna go out there and tell the common man about the juice” was tried & failed.

On debate club section now. You have the debate, you win, next day they pretend they won & conveniently forget your points. “I gradually came to hate them” being the famous closing line.

Should clarify: wasn’t literal “debate club”. I was being cheeky. He just means arguing with them, in general.

Also kind of ironic that I found out today about the media’s role in leading Hitler to extremism: they have that report released about YT sidebar recommending “right wing content” to normie cons. And what a problem that is. They’ve learned the wrong lesson from all of this.

The answer isn’t “well then we’ll shut down all the shit tier papers Hitler ended up reading”. The solution is for him to never want to read shit tier papers. The answer is for the top tier papers to do a better job. To be honest & intelligent & fair. But as then, they won’t now
