These big tech companies actively build themselves up as cults. I've seen it firsthand. Quasireligious initiation rituals. Fervent belief in a utopian world-purifying mission. Onsite "perks" so you never need to leave work or socialize with outsiders except to sleep.

The Google leak is an example of the regular performative ceremonies done by the leadership. What starts as typical company Q&As become chances for up-and-coming commissars to harangue executives on lack of diversity, which then becomes a process for CEOs to sanctify themselves.

To be clear, they weren't founded as "social-justice" cults from the beginning. The cult behavior of SV tech companies originated in selling themselves as cool so hordes of desperate status-chasing H1Bs would work hard with no work-life balance, all day long into the evening.

But once a cult-structure existed, with a certain latent utopian mission (belief in technological progress as savior of humanity), it was a ready-made shell for social-justice to insert themselves in, hermit-crab-like, taking advantage of ready-made levers of influence.

You should see the "swag stores" these companies have. SV techies LOVE to dress themselves up in company logos -- and pay extra for it. It's a way of showing their high status to other bugmen.https://techcrunch.com/2012/11/19/facebooks-new-on-campus-schwag-shop-dropped-the-the-its-simply-called-store/ …
