What an awful take. What is this? WW2 wasn’t working anymore so now you’re trying to spin a tenuous WW1 narrative . Is that what’s going on? As a REALLY basic take: 4 of the 5 major combatants were multi-ethnic empires (2 w/in their borders, 2 w/ empires abroad). This is basic.https://twitter.com/TheAtlantic/status/1039985518828769280 …

I could go off about this ALL day because it’s my favorite war to study, so I know a fair amount (for a layman anyway) about it. But I’ll end w/ this: where did the war kick off? The Balkans. Where, unlike say France at the time, a hodgepodge of ethnic groups live close together.

A collection of smaller ethnic groups, a beautiful tapestry of multiculturalism, caught between Austria, Russia, and the Ottomans (all multiethnic as well). None w/ their own clearly defined homelands (at the time). And they fought each other. And eventually sparked WW1.
