I’m more aware of it on the left but I’m sure it exists on the right too, but there is a big problem w/ word thinking. “Safety”, “hate”, “racist/racism”. “Diversity”, “marginalized”, “wrong side of history”. I could go on but you get the point. What do these even mean?

They have definitions, sure. But they’re so broad. And can be applied arbitrarily. “Hate”: was Jeong not hateful? Was Black Panther really “diverse”? “Racism” is a classic example of the unclear/malleable definition. But they’re all thrown around as if they’re crystal clear.

The problems are manifold: 1) most of them are loaded terms. There is a vague understanding what is meant when they’re used, sort of, and the ppl who coined/appropriated them set what the typical understanding is. 2) asking for concrete definition just gets you in the weeds.

Hard to even have a discussion w/ ppl who throw this jargon around unironically. The first thing they may do is cry foul just for being asked to specify what they mean by their favorite term. If they’re a little more honest, they will define their version, but that’s time wasting

Oh I agree: I don’t play the define game myself. If I hear someone say “racism” unironically (as an example), I dismiss it out of hand. I don’t call ppl racist. I don’t argue about what it really is. I hear white noise essentially. It’s a non-term to me at this point.
