In addition, the Democrats had a *huge* coalition consisting of Southern Conservatives, Midwestern Farmers, Rust Belt workers, and Unionized laborers. Even when the GOP controlled the White House, the Dems always ruled Congress.

The 60s saw the conservatives leave the Dems for Wallace/Nixon, prompting Hart-Celler for a massive continuous wave of new immigrants to replace the wayward southerners. The Midwest left later, and we are now seeing the remnants of labor leave the Dem coalition.
