I’m pomodoro-ing my way through an essay today, one that isn’t due until the start of next month. I literally haven’t been able to work on an essay without a shit ton of adderall and without doing it at the eleventh hour in over half a decade

This isn’t even getting into the issues with primary education either (though the dominant religious character of each country probably gives you an idea of how that goes — remember that Presbyterianism is nowhere near as hierarchical as the patronage hierarchy of Anglicanism).

Scotland tracks roughly with the population size of London, currently about 6ish million. The population of England currently is 53 million. The only part of Great Britain characterised by an actively educated population is a small minority.

Another big issue is the role of personal relationships to god/the church in each country’s religion. Anglicanism doesn’t really demand that you read the Bible, Presbyterianism absolutely does. So nearly everybody in Scotland was literate, whereas most in England were not.

Importantly, Oxbridge had religious tests for entry, you had to swear fealty to the Church of England to matriculate. None of the Scottish unis had that (Edinburgh especially was never religiously affiliated, prided itself on being a civic uni) which meant more Scots could go.

When Scotland joined the union is 1707, Scots in England got treated with suspicion and jealousy because they seemed over educated relative to their class status. In 1707 England had two unis: Oxbridge, Scotland had five: Aberdeen, St A’s, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee.
