This announcement also speaks to a broader trend. @US_FDA has outlined a Drug Competition Action Plan (DCAP) which is meant to speed approvals and increase competition. As a result, just this July, they approved a record number of generic drugs for a month, at 126.

As part of DCAP, we’ve highlighted all the instances where, as with EpiPen, there is a drug that is no longer patent protected but doesn't face any generic competition, and laid out guidance to help speed the approval of complex generics. http://go.usa.gov/xUHDY

Here in Canada, four insulin pens are approximately $125...I don't know the actual cost because with Universal Health Care and affordable health care benefits, I pay ZERO out-of-pocket costs for my husband's life-necessity meds...surely, the U.S. can find a better way.

You MUST get INSULIN generics to the market IMMEDIATELY!!!! Prices are soaring, driving up Medicare and Medicaid costs, not to mention elderly co-payers choose to buy or eat!

Of course, thanks to
#SinglePayer healthcare in every other developed nation, they already pay only a fraction of what we are gouged for here for the brand name pharmaceuticals. Want to give us good news? Give us universal health care.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Why is my daughters insulin almost $200 for a vial that is a week supply? Insulin is her life support. Why?

I was prescribed it last week and couldn’t get it after several days. Had to go brand and it was $1450 for the two twin packs my daughter needs to be safe.

What the actual fuck? American healthcare is ridiculous. They cost $38 over here.

ALL life saving drugs (epinephrine, insulin, etc.) should be administered FREE OF CHARGE. The fact that Epi-Pens are to be made generic is not as big of deal as you would lead us to believe. $180 instead of $200, perhaps? Still profit mongering instead of healing.

@realDonaldTrump Big Pharma in action. Why not Insulin? -
What IS the big deal about announcement? EPINEPHRINE 0.3mg & JR 0.15mg pen injectors (alternatives to EPIPEN) HAVE BEEN marketed in US for several years It’s still too expensive for uninsured to pay for and back ordered frequently! Feels like fake news or needless hype!
-
There have been other brands of generic epinephrine auto-injectors on the market (specifically an Adrenaclick generic available only at CVS pharmacies), but no generics of Epi-Pen were available. It's just semantics really.
-
So if a doctor writes an Rx for "EpiPen or genetic alternative," it could previously only be filled for EpiPen, as the generics on the market were of other branded epinephrine auto-injectors. Hopefully, the presence of more generics in the market will lower prices.
