Don't be alarmed by the water swamping some of our shore-side parks today: there's a king tide in Puget Sound and it will recede soon. King tides occur when the moon is closest to the sun. Here's a photo from Golden Gardens Park this morning.

After a 20-month closure, saltwater Colman Pool is being readied for summer use starting June 19. Crews made plaster and pool shell repairs, tested a new filtration system, and started filling it up with salt water. A couple of orcas even swam by to see the action!

Mayor Durkan has closed all Seattle parks, boat ramps, athletic fields, public golf courses & beaches through end of Sunday 9/13 due to unhealthy air quality from wildfire smoke. Normal reopening times on Monday morning are expected, unless air quality takes a turn for the worse.

To help reduce the spread of COVID-19, PARKING LOTS will close at 8 most popular parks: Green Lake, Lincoln, Golden Gardens, Seward, Magnuson, Gas Works, Alki Beach & Discovery. Parks are open ONLY for activities where social distancing can be maintained.

We recently installed new accessible mats at Alki Beach Park and Seward Park for the summer season. And we'll be installing an accessible mat at Matthews Beach soon. These mats improve beach accessibility for visitors who use wheeled or mobility devices.

We've heard from many athletic teams & community members about damage & unsafe conditions dogs can cause on athletic fields. We worked with local teams to develop and put up new signs at fields to remind the public that dogs are NOT allowed on any athletic field.

At Golden Gardens Park recently, a group of volunteers filled an entire truck with bags of litter, much of it small or micro trash. This is difficult to collect from beach areas. Thanks, volunteers, for coming out on a gray day to make things better! #VolunteersRock #ParkProud

Due to ongoing poor air quality, we're extending closure of beaches, boat ramps, parks, & playfields through end of Mon., 9/14. The City is not issuing citations, but all residents are strongly encouraged to avoid outdoor activities & remain inside if able until quality improves.

Due to unsafe, dangerous pool deck temperatures, Rainier Beach Community Center Pool must close for the rest of today & tomorrow. Pool staff will be redeployed to beaches. The Rainier Beach Community Center cooling center will remain open until 8:00pm tonight.

Today (6/30), SPR is temporarily closing Cal Anderson Park to the public at 12pm to allow crews to assess damage and remove damage. At this time, no changes will be made to the community garden or art installed by demonstrators. More info here

Our crews were out in force this weekend, all day and into the night, clearing and de-icing paths, roads and parking lots throughout our city's huge parks and recreation system. They also supported SDOT snow plowing, and much more. A shout out to some really impressive teamwork!

In recent months the City has doubled litter pickup, traveling along 18 routes 2x/week to grab debris and illegally dumped trash. Combined with other Clean City efforts, the first week in April saw 158,616 pounds of trash removed, plus over 18K needles. fal.cn/3eIPP

At Lake City Mini Park, Christopher & Eric from our NE maintenance crew removed dandelion tap roots and aged bark that was choking the base of the trees. They added compost mulch, which feeds the trees with nutrients (plus, it looks a lot nicer!). #HealthyTrees #SeattleShines

We recently purchased new land in the Rainier Valley (3638 34th Ave S), expanding the size of this future park by 33%. This new park increases equitable access to parks, improving physical and mental health in an area of the city where many people experience health disparities.

In Ravenna Park, gardener Anna R. pruned some large conifers 🌲 and ground up the limbs to create mulch islands around the trees. The right amount of mulch is crucial for tree health because it keeps moisture in the soil, prevents erosion, suppresses weeds, and *mulch* more. 😄

Magnolia Park is quite lengthy as it runs along the bluffs atop Magnolia hill. Softer soil this time of year allowed staff on our Central maintenance team to properly edge the turf on the very long sidewalk there. One of the many tasks of park maintenance; nice job! #ParkProud

Through a partnership with we have a new electrical hook-up for food trucks in Denny Park. At the city's oldest park food trucks can now plug in rather than run on generators. This is a great step forward in lessening our impact on the natural environment.

Stay out of the water at Madison Park Beach & Matthews Beach. Right now, the water here could make you sick. recommends that people do not swim or play in the water here. Next water samples will be collected next week for testing. Check back here for updates.

Pretty, but hazardous! Snow covered trees are unpredictable, so stay out from under them, and out of forests. Recent wind storms weakened some area trees and branches, and heavy snow and ice increase the risk of snapping branches and trunks. Please be careful out there!
