Yesterday we posted about “Mario” the doodle, a dog we saved from a fire. We learned this AM that after showing a strong recovery yesterday, Mario passed away this morning. We are glad he got to spend one more day with his owners but are heartbroken for their family’s loss. 💔

An active Seattle firefighter/EMT died suddenly yesterday just before coming on shift. We are heartbroken by this tragedy and are all grieving the loss of our friend and colleague, Matt Runte. A procession is about to begin from Seattle to a funeral home in Kent.
Effective immediately, any person who live or works in King County and is at least 60 years-old can walk-in and get vaccinated at the SFD Community Vaccination Hubs in Rainier Beach and West Seattle.

Today, WWII veteran Hideyoshi Horikawa (Eddy) celebrated his 100th birthday! Due to COVID-19, friends and family planned a drive-by celebration and invited us along with and to wish Eddy a Happy Birthday and to thank him for his service!
At this weekend’s match on May 2, we vaccinated 83 fans. We will be BACK at future home matches and can be found in the West Field Plaza outside of section 140 and in the East Main Concourse outside of section 104. Come cheer on the Sounders FC and stop by!
SFD Deputy Chief Jay Schreckengost was found deceased in the Cliffdell area today where the search has been focused. We are incredibly saddened by this news and grieving alongside his family. We will always remember you Jay, you are forever in our hearts.

The large number of 911 calls for slips and falls on ice and vehicle collisions is keeping Seattle firefighters and paramedics incredibly busy. From 5 p.m. on Dec. 22 through 5 p.m. today, the department has responded to 515 total calls.

In yesterday’s protests, at least 3 set fires occurred in Capitol Hill & First Hill. We want to remind individuals that fires can have unintended consequences including property damage and in a worst case scenario – loss of life. Do not intentionally ignite fires.

On June 2, firefighters conducted a traditional “move-in” of the new Engine 25 apparatus into the bay. Firefighter-Driver Corey Bostick, who has spent the last 22 years at Station 25 will be the new senior driver of Engine 25. We look forward to seeing this rig hit the streets!

Today, a group of paddleboarders helped pull a man from Lake Washington to shore in Seattle and began life saving efforts until SFD arrived to take over. The approx. 65-year-old male was pronounced deceased on scene, but we applaud the paddleboarders for their quick action.

The past few months have been incredibly difficult for the Seattle Fire Department family, with several losses of our own members. Today, we honor Deputy Chief Jay Schreckengost at his funeral service in Bellevue. Rest In Peace Jay, we’ll take it from here.
🚨 We are responding to a large number of calls across the City for slips and falls on ice on sidewalks, roadways, parking lots, etc. Falling on ice can cause significant injuries. Don’t drive or walk on the ice - stay indoors until conditions improve if you can.
We have responded to 6 brush and bark fires today.
REMINDER:

• Dispose of smoking materials in proper receptacles and douse in water
• Make sure chains or other car parts are not dragging from your vehicle

Ladder 5 made a special visit with Christmas presents to a young girl named Ella, who is battling cancer. Ella’s dad is a fellow firefighter in Idaho. It may be hard to see the smiles through our masks, but Ella made our day just as much as we tried to bring happiness to her. 🎁
