Feb 4, 2001: demolition experts implode London's 10-storey CN Tower, with its ground floor station. The station had only been used since 1969 and was actually the fifth passenger station on this site, with the first having opened in 1856. 1/3

It was nice to be in Brampton this evening, meeting up with friends and contacts in my hometown. I even got to chat with Mayor Patrick Brown for a few minutes on transit and green infrastructure.

Main Street North has several empty buildings and vacant lots. Unfortunate, as there’s lots of potential here.

Personally, I’d make it the site of a permanent market building, complementing the seasonal farmers market on Main Street. Commuters could pick up fresh food after getting off a GO train or a Züm bus. And give another reason to go downtown.

Though the Nelson Street demolition (an old Loblaws store that was later subdivided) is supposed to make way for a new central library and Innovation Centre (especially if a full University campus ever comes to Brampton), there is no plan for the Heritage Theatre site.

Meanwhile, the old Heritage Theatre – abandoned once the Rose Theatre behind it opened – will come down this year. Was once the Capitol Theatre. – mjesto: Rose Theatre Brampton

Next to go is this office building. Metrolinx bought this along with the now-demolished houses behind.

There’s a little less Downtown Brampton than the last time I was here.

Naively thought I’d walk along Mississauga Road over the Credit River. There were no signs to indicate this wasn’t a through sidewalk. When planned the Mississauga Road widening, did they think at all about active transportation?

McMurchy Woollen Mill, Huttonville. On the bank of the Credit River, this Mill has been boarded up as long as I can remember. It’s too bad it isn’t being used for anything interesting.

Even municipal elections, which use optical scan machines because they count multiple votes (mayor, councillor and/or trustee), have paper trails. Manual recounts are easy.

I’ve scrutineered election counts on behalf of municipal, provincial, and federal elections in Toronto and Brampton. Watching ballots get counted - usually with representatives for other candidates - makes me feel good about our simple and transparent voting process in Canada.

The classic Toronto squeeze. I’m not sure why this driver was in such a hurry to get by me on my bike when he’s dropping passengers off at the next driveway.

Toronto. King Street. Where private construction companies get to park their cars on the sidewalk and pedestrians have to walk on the road. Private construction projects should not take over sidewalks, bike lanes and roads.
