Lengthy-ish story with a point: When I was younger my Crohn's manifested in an unpleasant way I won't detail. Col. Trende took me to the flight surgeon, who described a surgery that would work but had a 10% chance of life-altering complications. 1/https://twitter.com/TPCarney/status/1373997792847355909 …

It is not the duty of the president to obey the health advisor, but instead to consider his advice. https://twitter.com/kaitlancollins/status/1373994600822620161 …

Thankfully we got a 2nd opinion from a local GI, and it turned out that there was a medicine that could fix the issue, without the risk of complications. When my dad confronted the flight surgeon, he basically responded: "When you go to a surgeon, you get surgical solutions." 2/

That was too glib, but I think it is important when dealing with experts: They tend to have expertise in their narrow area of focus, but may not be particularly well-versed in competing/alternate considerations. 3/

Moreover, their focused expertise tends to inflate the weight they give to their area of expertise. 4/

If you go to a public health expert you'll tend to get answers that focus on knocking down the virus, if you go to an economist, you'll get answers that focus on the economy, pediatricians will focus on the impact on kids, etc. 5/

All of which is to say, "listen to the experts" is a pleasing answer, and is certainly better than "huh maybe we can explore injecting disinfectants," but the question of *which* experts we listen to often involves hidden underlying normative judgments. 6/

And those arbitrary, personal judgments can dramatically alter the outcome we end up with. 7/7

Also I should do threads like this more often, as "block users en masse" days are strangely relaxing and satisfying. Vaya con Dios, trollito!

Slow walking COVID testing is not equivalent to getting a good 2nd opinion Sean. Trump ignored every basic pandemic protocol developed over decades for personal gain.

This might be an important point in a vacuum where the person seeking the advice wasn’t specifically looking for anything that would let him off the hook for this issue. Not so much second opinion as looking for willing hacks to back him up.
