This actually explains a lot of our political development over the past 40 years. Completely agree that if you want to start a company and have a ton of $$$ you don't really care whether the top rate is 39.6% or 35%. 1/https://twitter.com/mcuban/status/1313130690599432193 …

My bet is the GOP is eventually forced to moderate on social issues and the “suburbs” eventually “forgive” them for being Trump lovers (or the Trump lovers are mostly gone) and that tension forces Dems to basically not go down the AOC path to better compete. But we’ll see.

What’s a “social” issue vs an “economic” issue is also often blurry. Immigration is both for sure.

We are in an era of trench warfare on tax policy. I've been saying it for a decade. It's even more profound with the sharp (and needed) cut in the corporate tax rate a few years ago.

The other angle would be if the energy on social issues moved over the the woke side wearing out their casual UMC allies; while salience of gays/guns recede

I'm a bleeding heart liberal. The smartest thing the Dems could do is call for a flat tax and federalism. Let states tax and spend their own money. If you want nice roads and good schools pay for them. No more transfers to red states.
-
Careful- flat taxes disproportionately impact lower income people.
