Except that making it a holiday means the only people working that day are the poorest ones who work holidays.

You can't solve it completely, lots of folks have to work weekends. Either moving it or making it a holiday is a good start.
-
In Hawaii election day is a state holiday & employers are required to provide 2 hrs free time to vote. Vote by mail is even better.
-
I love that. Let's do that.

We do this in Canada too!
-
With one huge difference in Canada though...http://www.elections.ca/content.aspx?section=vot&dir=faq&document=faqvoting&lang=e#a6 …pic.twitter.com/U9bTAuy3ew

Do you live in Canada? This is not really enforced. Maybe in gov/office jobs. Many countries have multiple voting days/ natl holiday 2 vote
-
I do and own a business and always make sure employees have time to vote. Holiday would be better but it's better than nothing.
-
Good for you! I am aware of this rule. Not really interested in arguing. Bye!
-
Wasn't arguing, did you experience otherwise? Honestly I don't know anyone who has had trouble getting the time but mostly office types
-
Yes it's a "law" but these laws don't work for all Canadians. Same as not getting overtime/holiday pay.
-
I hear you. It could be definitely be better.

it's the easiest way to keep the actual working class from voting.
-
I work for minimum wage and I can tell you right now that no fucking holiday could EVER guarantee corporate hourly workers a day off
-
Honestly it seems like people who propose these ideas think everyone works a 9-5 or has a salaried academic post like they always have
-
yep. especially service workers -- those jobs are 365 days a year. voting being a national holiday, or a weekend, would still help.
-
It would help if small business owners actually had to pay time and a half on holidays, which they don't in my state
-
my state is the same. i worked for tips for a LONG time, so made $2.63/hr otherwise. luckily have always lived walking distance to a poll.

This is not a democracy. It is a constitutional republic with an authoritarian economic system.
