Biden's age is an enormous factor. I'd have more faith that he would hold the line against his own base if this was the Joe Biden of, say, 1994. Very old men tend to lose their moral courage. It takes persistent energy to stand against the tide.

Although certainly a far less extreme example than those you provide, could you say that the Iran-Contra scandal was an example of this as Reagan was into his late 70s in his second term?
