Much of our modern technology contravenes "empirically verified physics" from the birth of modern science to the end of the 19th C. There is always new phenomena which have yet to be accommodated by current physical theories. Most glaring 1 is consciousness. Then there's psi.

And the discoverers of every one of those new phenomena willingly bore the burden of proof through careful, independently verifiable, experimentation and peer review. The requirement was the same for Einstein as it was for Pons and Fleischmann. Immortality or ignominy.
