" Center leaders say that a cross-disciplinary approach is what’s needed to understand polar regions in all their complexity at a time when climate change is destabilizing the Arctic and Antarctic regions faster than anywhere else on Earth."

Another paper! Sarah Shackleton measures ocean temperatures in the last interglacial (that’s over 120000 years ago 😳) using Antarctic ice. Back then, ice sheets were were smaller, sea level was higher, and Sarah now shows that the oceans were a degree warmer.

Behold the beauty of frost flowers! These delicate ice structures are unique to the surface of newly forming sea ice, forming when moisture in the atmosphere becomes supersaturated due to low temps. Here, Scripps' Jeff Bowman collects frost flowers in the Arctic. 📷Matthias Wietz

Prof Helen Fricker goes for it all in Nye Lecture: a 100 years of Antarctic science, the realization that the planet is warming and the impact on Antarctica! What an amazing synthesis for with a tribute to the many scientists who advanced our knowledge.
