This @NeuroCellPress from the amazing Pedro Jacob has been on the @biorxivpreprint for a while but this version is WAY better and includes dopaminergic neurons acquiring the capacity to signal learned safetyhttps://www.cell.com/neuron/fulltext/S0896-6273(20)30220-8 …

This work says a lot of things and should make people think very differently about the last 25 yr of the fly memory literature. Differential aversive spaced training forms two memories. An aversive memory for the shock-paired odor and a safety memory for the other odor.

The safety memory is the protein-synthesis dependent LTM and the aversive memory is what the field has called anaesthesia resistant memory, or ARM. Turns out these are memories for the two odors, rather than 'phases' of aversive memory.

In retrospect this seems so obvious. Repetitive spaced differential aversive training trials allow the flies to form an enduring memory that the 'other odor' is safe. This is btw our first study of 'aversive LTM'. Pedro Jacob is an incredible talent.

And, actually, it is difficult to understand how could the safety memory gradually appear (Fig. 1F).

I assume you are referring to the non significant decrease in the middle panel. There ‘may’ be something CXM sensitive there but it’s not anything I’d bank on. If you’re interested email me.

If the aversive part of LTM is actually ARM, why CXM can impaire this aversion (Fig. 1H)?

          But overall, it's a pretty remarkable discovery😁
