Note that Apple made this change back in June 2018, Chrome isn’t the first browser to do it. https://cabforum.org/2018/06/06/minutes-for-ca-browser-forum-f2f-meeting-44-london-6-7-june-2018/#Apple-Root-Program-Update …pic.twitter.com/xVWjv3xi8H
I first spotted the change in Chrome Canary about a month ago:https://twitter.com/scott_helme/status/1149685735043338245?s=21 …
There’s really no confusion over the reasons for this change: “the Chrome Security UX team has determined that the EV UI does not protect users as intended”
Considering the reference back to work announced by Chrome to evolve the UI, reducing positive indicators and moving to a more neutral stance, this should not be surprising.https://blog.chromium.org/2018/05/evolving-chromes-security-indicators.html …
There’s also a hint to work done by James Burton and Ian Carroll on confusing company names in EV certs. Details here: https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/mozilla.dev.security.policy/szD2KBHfwl8%5B1-25%5D … cc @iangcarroll
If you’re interested I’d recommend the linked Chrome research on EV UI where they say: “Finally, having found little evidence that EV indicators influence user behavior, we consider whether URLs can be more effective identity indicators” https://storage.googleapis.com/pub-tools-public-publication-data/pdf/400599205ab5a1c9efa03e2a7c127eb8200bf288.pdf …
The world: "the what?"
Yeah, I had to do some reading to realize it meant "the padlock".
Wait, correct me if I'm wrong (and I probably am, judging by how stupid this sounds), but DV will only net me a grey padlock and to get a green padlock I will need EV? That would eradicate LE for e-commerce and other security aplications.
Why would it?
