Greg's story is a fascinating read on what we described in 1995 as one of the great intelligence operations of the Cold War filling in details we could only guess at 25 years ago. I'm glad to see we got the story right.

I recall vividly how at the end of my trip to Switzerland in 1995 to find former employees of Crypto AG, one of them managed to find a smoking-gun memo from 1975 that showed an NSA crypto mathematician named Nora Mackebee had attended a Crypto design meeting.pic.twitter.com/i3nEiW3In1

My guess: NSA old-timers will roll their eyes at the presentation of this spectacular intelligence sting as the work of the CIA. NSA (with its predecessor) was of course the brains behind the operation, starting with the legendary codebreaker William Friedman.

But hey, it's a CIA history! Dear disgruntled NSA folk: send me the NSA history of the Crypto AG caper and I will be glad to restore some balance.

Postscript: In 1995, no one from Crypto AG complained to us or to our
@baltimoresun bosses about our story. A Crypto executive faxed me Christmas greetings and asked for copies of our story. But in a statement they called it "old hearsay" and "pure invention."Show this thread -
I assumed then, and assume now, the statement was crafted by NSA and CIA. If the story had been wrong, Crypto AG would presumably have sued The Sun for libel. But we just dutifully reported what the company claimed, with as straight a face as possible: https://www.baltimoresun.com/news/bs-xpm-1995-12-15-1995349003-story.html …

I'm so happy that the WaPo piece led me to this. What great reporting, obviously it has stood the test of time and historical substantiation.

Sure you understand that the still connected former CIA officials and their network of media sources need some positive, feel good news after all they just tried to overthrow the
@POTUS and things didn't go so well. Cheer up Eric & his security detail still on the job. -
Idiotic comment.
