Three years ago Joe Hockey asked State and Territory Treasurers to remove the GST from sanitary products. They didn’t agree. We have decided to give this another go so in June I wrote to them to ask them again. This time, I hope they agree.
It is a practical issue. There’s no great gender conspiracy. It’s just a tax anomaly that can be fixed if all the states agree. Sure, there are much bigger issues - the drought, electricity prices, jobs - just to name a few. But that doesn’t mean we can’t deal with this as well.
Over the next 4 yrs states and territories will receive an additional $6.5b in GST revenue because of changes we have made to improve the integrity of the tax system. Agreeing to remove GST from sanitary items is a modest change and totally doable from a financial perspective.
Labor had 6 yrs in Govt to remove GST on sanitary items & did nothing. They promised to do it before the last election & reversed that promise before the election was held. Labor always wants you to judge them on what they say & promise, not what they do. We just get on with it.

Well Scott - if Australia is interested in slowing down manmade Climate Change, then why not take off the GST from solar panels and give people some incentive to reduce use of grid power - my suspicion is that most commentary on CC is just #pollyspeak
If the ALP were in power and thought the tax should be removed then, yes, it would be up to them.
