the only "security" measure that has _actually_ made hijackings less likely since 9/11 is locking the cockpit doors in flight. everything else has just been an exercise in eroding our 4th amendment rights.

maybe increased screening of checked bags, but there are privacy problems with that too, and TSA staff are largely underpaid and undertrained. the ritual humiliations of the shoe removal, the drink confiscation, and the nude scanner don't make anyone safer.

while I'm on this topic, the vast bulk of the PATRIOT Act had nothing to do with stopping terrorism, and was just a big wish-list of new powers for domestic law enforcement that they'd never been able to get enacted before, because they were blatantly unconstitutional.
