I don't think most defense attorneys get paid all that much frankly
even the worst, most obviously guilty people have a basic right to a vigorous and competent defense at trial, because cops and prosecutors playing fast and loose with the rules is a much bigger danger to society than any one criminal, no matter how heinous.
