right now in MA we're seeing daily COVID case counts nearly as high as the spring of 2020. but back then we usually had over a hundred, sometimes over 200, daily deaths; now we have usually around 4 to 6, sometimes as many as 12, sometimes zero.

our worst day was April 29th, 2020, when we had 252 deaths in a single day. as a percentage of the state's population, that's equivalent to nearly _twelve thousand_ people in the US dying in one day from one disease, or 2 to 3 times worse than the actual worst whole-US days
