right now in MA we're seeing daily COVID case counts nearly as high as the spring of 2020. but back then we usually had over a hundred, sometimes over 200, daily deaths; now we have usually around 4 to 6, sometimes as many as 12, sometimes zero.
we have just under 4.5 million fully vaccinated people (i.e. all over 12yo) out of a total population (including ineligible kids) of just over 7 million. seems like the vaccines work pretty well.

any deaths from covid are too many, and most of even the relatively tiny number we now have daily were preventable, if we had even better vax rates and also better non-vax mitigation measures still in place. but it's a really stark difference.

our worst day was April 29th, 2020, when we had 252 deaths in a single day. as a percentage of the state's population, that's equivalent to nearly _twelve thousand_ people in the US dying in one day from one disease, or 2 to 3 times worse than the actual worst whole-US days
