They chased the car that fled the scene and got her insurance information, before coming back to tell us (several times??) that this was a civil matter and they weren't going to charge anyone with a crime, etc.

We're at the body shop. I'm hugging Kissmate because he's all that matters. The car place says they're backed up a whole month because of covid. School starts next week. This is fine.

(I don't really understand how fleeing the scene wasn't a crime, even though I don't want anyone locked up!!, so conflicted feelings are occurring. I wonder if it was someone important??)

I'm on hold with the insurance company, so hopefully they can do something about this. I've checked over Kissmate and cleaned his cuts. Just knees and legs from a lower (??!) airbag. He's shaken but ok. His first accident. (I've been in a couple in the past.)

Update 1: I filed a claim with our insurance, who was polite and helpful but did gently warn us that being the "rear ending" party of the accident wasn't great for us, even though the other party fled the scene immediately.

Update 2: The other party called us (!!) because the police gave her our number (?? they didn't give us hers) and she wanted to confirm our names before she called our insurance. She kept saying "*I* was the one who was HIT" but I kept my answers short and informative.

Update 3: I then immediately got a phone call from a harried representative from our insurance company saying that the other party had called her and "was very upset" because "the police gave her the wrong information" (??) about us / our car. I directed her to our open claim.

We reverse looked her up because I was curious and she lives in one of the richer areas in town, so I guess that explains why the cops didn't arrest her for what you guys are telling me was definitely a crime. (I told our insurance exactly what happened.)

yikes, what a mess! yeah, I'm, uh, pretty sure it's explicitly illegal to speed off from a car crash you were involved in. may not matter w/r/t insurance liability, but… anyway, I'm really sorry you're having to deal with this. I hope you and KM are OK!

Replying to @ScottMadin
Up here if you speed off from a crash or otherwise leave where the other person can directly observe you, insurance will nail you to the wall even besides it being a hit and run because you're treated as potentially trying to obscure evidence...
