also, pay scales and paths for advancement should always be open knowledge, published somewhere easily accessible at least internally to the company, if not fully public. lateral career moves to different roles at the same level should be easy and even encouraged.

and staying in the same role for a long time, without promotion, because the employee likes the work and is comfortable at that level, should also be seen as fine and normal, not reason to start dinging their reviews or managing them out.

about QA roles in software dev still.
QA should be on the same pay scale as programmers. A company that doesn't value QA equally to programming is a company producing bad quality software.
