one of her points was that _even when_ all parties have the best intentions, even when all parties are longtime friends who trust each other, carefully negotiated contracts _protect_ that friendship, and guard against unforeseen complications.

when you're friends, but there's one or both of your livelihoods involved, carefully negotiating a contract isn't putting business _ahead_ of your friendship, it's actually shielding your friendship from the vicissitudes of business.
